Moving from Joomla 1.0 to 1.5 March 23, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I came to this book having previously implemented a Joomla 1.0 site, wanting to know what Joomla 1.5 has to offer. The depth of Barrie North's knowledge is impressive and his explanations are very clear. I found myself focussing on chapters 9 and beyond, covering templates and examples of practical site implementation, dipping back into previous chapters for reference detail. The book was written before the Joomla 1.0 to 1.5 migration process was finalised, so it doesn't cover practical migration steps. However, this topic is well documented on the Joomla site.
Some advanced subjects are well covered, such as Google Adwords conversion, going beyond other books I have read. The book does a good job of explaining Joomla to the new user and clarifying topics for the more experienced user. I thoroughly recommend the book.
I can see Joomla! clearly now ..... February 9, 2008 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I'm planning to build my first website. Content is King. I've done the due diligence bit, and decided that Joomla! is the one for me, but it seemed so complex.
Well that's no longer the case; Barrie Norman has produced an excellent guide to the brand new 1.5 version of Joomla! and having read it I feel entirely confident that I'll soon have a site up and running.
The book is very well produced, excellent quality, seems to cover all that you'll need to know and is well laid out. It's well written in that time-proven style; tell 'em what you're gonna tell 'em; tell them; tell them what you've told them. The order of the chapters is logical and it is easy to follow through.
One of the hardest concepts to grasp is that of Sections, Categories, and Articles, but the author leads you through this in an easy 'building knowledge as you go' style which results in you ultimately gaining a full understanding of all the constituent parts and how thay fit together.
The example sites for a school, restaurant and blog site make for really useful case studies.
The interviews with existing owners of a variety of sites explaining why they chose Joomla!, what they like about it, what extra add-ons they are using, and relating their user experiences are also really useful.
There are also a couple of sections on that oh so vital black-art of Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), and it's great to get the heads-up on all these important tips & tricks before creating your website. It'll be so much simpler to get it right first time, and there's no point in building a site that nobody can find!
I am entirely confident that a few hours reading this book will pay back many-fold when it comes to actually developing my site.
I would recommend that anybody embarking on a Joomla! site build buys this book and reads it first.
Excellent February 5, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found this to be an excellent book - really useful for getting to grips with Joomla and trying to actually build a website. I've built websites but never used Joomla. I found the whole Joomla "workflow" difficult to get my head around using the online resources. this book has helped put it in focus and has clarified the language, maybe just me but I didn't find Joomla-ese very intuitive. Still got a long way to go before I'd say I felt comfortable with the Joomla CMS way of building sites but this book was a big help in getting started along the track.
Good and clear February 4, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I like this book a lot. I have also bought Joomla Template design and Beginning Joomla: From Novice to Professional, but this is by far the best.
Firstly, the quality of the pages and print is high (not the case with Joomla Template Design at 27!). The diagrams are helpful and the text and language clear. I am a newcomer to Joomla and I find that the author's explanations of categories, sections and articles are very helpful. Barrie North has taken care to explain and introduce each chapter well, including where he will be going into greater depth in later chapters. Tips and notes are sprinkled throughout.
The author goes through the steps needed to create a couple of simple sites using different methods, such as one using uncategorised content and one with secions and categories. The book would be worth buying just for the clear explanations of these, which are really helpful for a novice Joomla user.
The version of Joomla that this book refers to is the latest (1.5)
Another very useful part of the book for me is the section looking at examples of real sites that use Joomla. This gave me some good ideas for extensions to use on my own sites.
Overall an excellent resource in my opinion
Great book for all January 29, 2008 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
This book is ideal for complete beginners to CMS systems and web developers who want to focus on Joomla! but haven't used it much before. It'll certainly get you up to speed with Joomla! faster than clicking around forums that's for sure.
The first chapter or two cover some pretty basic stuff that would be very helpful to beginners, though most web designers/developers such as myself can skip it. That's not to say the book is of no use to developers. There is actually a lot of information in it, to quite a deep level, so for more experienced developers, it's a really handy book to dip into. It's easy to read, not too heavy going and written in plain english.
