Inspiring July 27, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Never having heard of ATCs before, I borrowed this book from the library first, before ordering it through Amazon, just to find out what all the fuss was about. Being a textile artist in the making, but never quite getting round to quitting my boring day job and immersing myself in a more creative role, I found this book to be pure inspiration.
It is true that there is very little text, there are no instructions on how to create these little gems, but that to me is part of the book's appeal. It simply provides the inspiration, shows you what can be done and lets the artist's imagination and expertise create the work of art.
It surprised me that there is so much in this book to interest textile artists. Although in the book much of the work on the ATCs involve the use of collage and, basically, scrapbooking techniques, there are no tedious "how to" instructions given and so the designs can be adapted or used simply for inspiration.
It is obviously a book which inspires more than it informs, but perhaps at the end of the day this book does both of those things.
1000 Artist Trading Cards November 11, 2007 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
I bought this book having seen a review in a craft magazine and as it was the first book I'd seen dedicated to ATCs I bought and and I regret having done so. Most of the ATCs are made using fabric and machine stitching which is I suppose to be expected since the author is the editor-in-chief of Cloth Paper Scissors and Quilting Arts Magazines but the blurb did say mixed media atcs but I don't this is followed through. Additionally there is no indication as to how the ATCs have been created - there are only pictures of the finished items. It's a lovely book to flick through but it dosn't inspire me - I much prefer Artist Trading Workshop by Bernie Berlin and Rubber STamping Artist Trading Cards by Jill Haglund
Nice to Have ATC's Idea August 17, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This was the only book that I cold find when I started making ATC's back in January and it is inspiring seeing all the peoples ATC's but I didn't find It helpfull in the making. Definatley lovely to flick through though and nice to see people like you and me in there, worth the buy if like me you love looking at books.
A good introduction for beginners April 20, 2007 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
I enjoy creating ATCs (time allowing!) and often seek inspiration from online forums, mixed media magazines and books. As there aren't many ATC-specific books available, I couldn't wait for this one to arrive. The book includes some useful techniques for different mixed-media collage at the beginning, along with *some* inspirational ATCs submitted by readers of 'Paper, Cloth, Scissors' and 'Quilting Arts' magazines (both great magazines). On the whole though, I found many of the ATCs looked to be produced by beginners and, for me, weren't very inspiring. Personally, I much prefer a couple of other books I have which feature more ATCs from recognised artists and designers - Artist Trading Card Workshop (by Bernie Berlin) and Artist Trading Cards: An Anthology of ATCs (published by Stampington). Overall, if you're new to ATCs this book is worth buying. If you're a bit more advanced, don't expect too much from it.
