Web designers must read this book November 21, 2001 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
...This is the web design equivalent of 'What they don't teach you at Harvard business school' As a designer, you must read this before commencing on any serious design. It is a little wordy in places but covers every aspect I feel that I need on useability of web design. This book should be made compulsary reading.
Brilliant - a man who can make himself understood. June 20, 2001 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Don't you get tired of reading all those books that warble and and on until you get lost and wonder what it was the author was actually trying to say? Well I do! This book is quite simply brilliant. It tells you exactly what you want to know and explains it in a way which is understand. What more could you want? It's a little expensive but I've paid more for books that were a lot less use. I wish I'd had Nielsen as a university lecturer.
Jakob describes usability for information-services -- solely May 6, 2001 8 out of 12 found this review helpful
I like this book. When I bought it, I knew what I was expecting. As seen on the cover, it doesn't provide sophisticated effects and looks, at first, to be really plain and boring. However if you know what Mr. Nielsen are describing with his usability ideas...you know what to expect of this book. The book describes how to make web sites attractive for users wanting to find particular information at once. If you are designing a state-of-the-art web site with a lot of fancy JavaScript, DHTML, ActiveX, Flash, etc. this books *doesn't* give you anything of use. If buyers just read the subtitle: "The Practice of Simplicity" they *will* not be disappointed and thus makes some of the other reviews seem a bit misinterpreted.
The essential message is "less is more". April 30, 2001 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Lots of screen dumps make it easy to pick up and flick through but they clutter the written content distracting you from the message (is a good coffee table book).
Ok book bot no revolution... March 26, 2001 A fairly decent book about not wasting web users time on "wasted ink" keeping your web design simple and tidy. Samples from real life helps getting the message across. This is not a how to book. On the down side the book is to long (to much wasted ink).
