Grand Designs-Series One August 15, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Grand designs always showcases the most innovative and beautiful architecture in the UK at the current time and this is the series that started it all off. You get a good selection of builds here that show a variety of designs and building techniques and it is great to have them all in one place at last. The Water Tower and House of Straw are two standout episodes but they are all fascinating and inspiring to watch. The extras are a bit sparse on this DVD, with some revisits and the CGI walkthroughs from each episode. This is a top collection of modern architecture, presented by Kevin McCloud who is obviously passionate about design. Well worth a viewing if you're a fan of the show and missed earlier series'.
Cool Series April 14, 2005 9 out of 9 found this review helpful
At first I thought that this program was going to be one of those TV takes over someones project, but ow now... with an amazing presenter in Mr Mcloud and some of the most gorgeous houses you are ever likely to see this is one to watch, over and over again...

What a great series this was- and a real joy to revisit. Its got eight builds- Newhaven timber frame kit Berkshire English Barn Brighton co operative build Amersham the Water Tower Suffolk the eco house Cornwall the Chapel Islington House of Straw Doncaster the Glass House .... -all interesting, mostly contrasting, and Kevin McCloud is such a great presenter. Hes never spiteful/ patronising/ harsh- hes always respectful, calm, intelligent and good to listen to. He seems to know his stuff. There are two DVDs- four builds on each, and also containing updates and revisits since broadcast, which are quite substantial, not just five minute segments. For the pedants- the 'extras' run to 1 hr and 34 minutes according to the back of the case.... :) Theres not many property programmes which have stood out for being positively inspirational but this is certainly one of them- absolutely recommended!

An excellent start to what turned out to be a fascinating, intelligent and entertaining set of series (although ignore the most recent (2004) Grand Designs Abroad as it's a load of tosh (apart from a couple of the builds)).Series 1 though is a must-buy purchase for anyone even vaguely interested in building their own property. Here's hoping the other series are also released in the near future.
